FIFA SOCCER '97 creates the most realistic soccer experience possible. Over 4,200 players with current statistics from 12 international leagues are included. While you play, international soccer commentators John Motson, Des Lynam, and Andy Gray provide play-by-play and color commentary. All of the players on the field are realistic as well, thanks to new Motion Blending technology, a combination of motion capture technology and rendering tools that allows the players to look more natural and have fluid movements. Multi-colored goalie jerseys and numbers embossed on the back of the uniforms are only a couple of graphical touches that heighten the true to life nature of the game. FIFA 98 is a good soccer game with three unfortunate problems: Shoddy framerate, some AI glitches, and Konami's ISS64. The awesome sound, multiplayer gameplay, and FIFA license make FIFA 98 a good buy for soccer enthusiasts -- but only if they already own ISS64. Others, especially sticklers for a steady framerate and fast-paced sports will definitely want to rent it first. But what ever you do, hook it up to a surround sound system and remind your three best buddies to stop by with their controllers.

FIFA '99 is the next in line for EA Sports' soccer franchise, having been released a short five months after the debut of World Cup '98 on the PlayStation. It almost seems as if Electronic Arts is cashing in its FIFA license as much as possible, but playing the '99 edition and you'll see why this game is the soccer game to have.

Ah, the game of football (soccer to you Americans who already have your own version of football ... although oddly enough the ball doesn't actually touch the foot much in your version). "The second most important thing in life," as they say here on the "Old Continent." Millions of people loving the game with their hearts and souls, cheering for their team; happy when they win, sad when they lose. Yes, people occasionally get in fights over decades old sports rivalries, but try telling some guy in Catalonia that Real Madrid is the best Spanish club, or that Inter is the best club in Milan...

And that's only the beginning...

Did I hear somebody mention South America? The fire in the veins of Brazilians, Argentineans, or Columbians; Africa, Asia... Well, football is all over the place, and it's (very) slowly creeping into the hearts of US fans.

So, as we're nearing the year before the turn of the millennia, in comes the newest product to promote the magical game, titled appropriately FIFA 2000. As far as the world of football simulations goes, EA Sports has the undisputed heavy weight champ in their corner. The FIFA football series is by far the best one on the market, and there hasn't been any serious contenders to the crown yet.

FIFA 2001: Major League Soccer aims to immerse its fans with the most realistic football experience possible. Over 50 international teams, including England, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, and the United States have made the cut, while 17 of the planet's top leagues have been incorporated as well. New motion captured moves from Matthaus, Mendieta, Scholes, and other soccer legends support the game's realism, with animated linesman and authentic light sourcing add that much more to the presentation. Perhaps the most important features, though, are the advanced sets of artificial intelligence, in-game cinematic cutscenes, and a ton of game modes that have been specially built for tournaments from around the world.

Hot on the heels of FIFA Soccer 2002, Electronic Arts has readied a World Cup-themed alternate version of the game. As the name suggests, the game focuses squarely on the World Cup tournament which takes place in Japan and Korea (May 31 to June 30 2002). Though FIFA 2002 featured a Road to the World Cup mode, players who wanted to take their favorite national team to victory were out of luck: qualification was as far as you could go. 2002 FIFA World Cup picks up where the old game left off and brings the excitement of the tournament home like no other game.

EA's FIFA Soccer 2004 offers the most significant changes the game has seen in years. The core gameplay is changing ever so slowly from super arcade play to a more comprehensive, more realistic style of soccer, and the series is better for it. But it's not quite there yet. The Off The Ball play is good in respects, not so good in others, the Career mode is killer, and the other EA features ? from the My FIFA to the unbelievable soundtrack to the PC and PS2 online play give this game such depth, it's just a simply impressive overall package. If you love to play online, then you have got to get this game for the PC or PS2. It's still a good purchase for the other systems, but the new online play is, as they say in the drug clinics, quite addictive.

FIFA SOCCER 06 contains all of the modes that made the previous FIFA SOCCER games great, including season, tournament, shoot-out, and verses modes. Voice-over commentary for the 06 version is provided by Clive Tydsley and Andy Gray. Soccer fans will enjoy hearing their expert commentary throughout the season as they recruit, train, and guide a soccer club to victory in FIFA SOCCER 06.
